Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a tuning session take?+
A first-time tuning takes a full 2 hours to carefully tune every note to perfection. Follow-up sessions may be shorter depending on how well the piano holds its tuning.
What is stretched tuning?+
Stretched tuning is a technique where the bass notes are tuned slightly flatter and the treble notes slightly sharper than equal temperament. This compensates for the natural inharmonicity of piano strings and produces a richer, more natural sound that the human ear perceives as "in tune."
How often should I tune my piano?+
We recommend tuning your piano at least once or twice a year. However, environmental factors can significantly affect how quickly your piano goes out of tune:
- Temperature changes from heating and air conditioning cause the soundboard to expand and contract
- Humidity fluctuations (dry winters with heaters, humid summers with AC) are the biggest factor
- Pianos near windows, vents, or exterior walls are more susceptible
If you notice your piano sounding off between regular tunings, it may benefit from more frequent sessions. New pianos or pianos that haven't been tuned in a long time may also need more frequent tuning until the strings stabilize.
What does the transparency report show?+
Before and after each tuning, we measure the precision of every note and provide you with a detailed report. You can see exactly how far each note was from the target pitch and how accurately it was tuned.
Do I need to be home during the tuning?+
Yes, someone should be present to let the tuner in. We recommend being nearby in case we need to discuss anything about your piano's condition.
